If you could ask God for anything what would it be? Solomon asked for wisdom. God was so pleased that he asked for wisdom and not riches, honor, and power that He not only gave him wisdom but He gave him riches, honor, and power as well. It doesn't seem that many of us will ever get the chance to ask for our "one thing", but most of us at least think about it. Even King David thought about it in Psalm 27:4.
One thing I ask of the LORD,
this is what I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the
LORD
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD
and to seek him in his temple.
This verse tells us a lot about David (including the fact that his counting skills are questionable). David's heart longed to be in the presence of God for every minute of his life. At the time of David's reign God's presence still dwelt in the tabernacle. This is the same tabernacle that the Levites had been moving from place to place ever since they first left Egypt.
David longed to be in the temple where God's spirit hovered right over the ark of the covenant. But, he wasn't allowed in there because he wasn't a priest. Only the priests were allowed to enter the most holy place.
How jealous would David be if he knew how good we have it? Since Jesus came our bodies are the temple; the place where God's spirit dwells (I Cor. 3:16). The "one thing" that David wanted, we have. The Spirit of the Living God dwells in us just as He did in the tabernacle in the days of Moses, Joshua, and David. Do we even realize what we have? Do we treat our temples with the same reverence that the Levites treated the ark? How often do we take for granted that God's Spirit dwells in us? How often do we rely on our own efforts as opposed to the power of the Spirit living in us? More on that tomorrow.
